By Derek Bargatze The Kurtz family arrived in Bombo, UG just a few weeks ago and they are already hard at work amongst the people. They have situated their living space, learned where to buy the best fruits and vegetables, met the neighbors, and are moving forward for a great 4 month experience. Already in their first week, Josh and Alyssa were already helping other families, in the midst of helping their two kids adjust to the change in scenery. Jackson (4) and Amani (1) are doing really well with the many new faces here in Bombo and are very free to greet any visitor or play with any neighbor kids.
As the Kurtz family is acclimating to the sudden change of diet, temperature, culture, and overall environment, they are making themselves known within the Bombo community. Josh is using his masonry skills to assist Francis on his new kitchen. He has been introducing many new ideas for healthier options for building a stove that maintains the emission of smoke out of the kitchen area. This will in turn prevent lung and eye damage from Annette (Francis' wife) who spends many hours cooking over fire. Alyssa has set out for opportunities to counsel youth and adults suffering with HIV/AIDS. This need amongst the people of Bombo Town is a heavy task. Alyssa hopes to join the efforts already being made here to help alleviate some of the burden. On the other side of our involvement in this community Josh is having fun playing volleyball and getting to know different youth in the area. This also has provided great opportunities for the kids to get out and meet many new faces and share our heart for the empowerment of people in Bombo.
