A Closer Look at Hygiene

Every Friday I teach Hygiene to Mr. Bargatze's and Ms. Price's class. We have covered the basics of oral health, hand and foot washing, and even hygienic bathroom practices (what surfaces to avoid, etc.). It is a great opportunity to introduce healthy hygiene practices with the kids, and give them practical tools like songs and iPad apps to help reinforce these habits.

We did an experiment in Hygiene class to highlight the need for soap and warm water to 'cut the grease' when hand-washing. Pepper sprinkled on a surface area of water will create a film that, when touched with only a wet finger will not be affected. But drop just a splash of soap and it'll immediately repel the pepper! The students got to practice this experiment, along with another hand washing experiment involving coconut oil on their hands.

The students learned the importance of keeping their feet clean and dry, being especially careful to wash them after sports practices! They practiced washing between their toes, and drying thoroughly before putting shoes back on.

During our segment on Oral Health students learned that sticky, gummy, sweet snacks were bad for their teeth, but fresh fruits like this one are a great natural tooth cleaner!
